In a significant development, the Volta River Authority (VRA) has announced the potential spillage of excess water from the Akosombo Dam due to rising water levels and substantial inflow. This announcement has put communities and stakeholders on high alert as they brace for possible impacts.
In a formal notice dispatched to over 40 stakeholders, including the Minister for the Interior and local assemblies within the dam’s catchment areas, VRA’s Deputy Chief Executive in Charge of Services, Ing. Ken Arthur, disclosed the authority’s proactive approach. The VRA plans to engage stakeholders in discussions about the potential spillage’s implications, preventive measures, and effective communication strategies.
This announcement follows a similar situation last year when the VRA commenced releasing excess water from the Akosombo Dam in September 2023. That spillage, which continued until October 30, 2023, had profound repercussions, affecting numerous districts, displacing approximately 39,000 people, and causing property damage worth millions of Ghana cedis.
The prospect of another spillage has understandably raised concerns among residents and local authorities. The VRA’s commitment to engaging stakeholders aims to ensure that any potential impacts are mitigated as effectively as possible, safeguarding communities and minimizing disruption.
As the situation evolves, The Daily Chronicle will continue to provide timely updates and detailed coverage on the measures being taken to manage this critical issue. Stay tuned for more information on this developing story.
